Lost in a crowd

They aired the commercials for this one, weeks before the first stream. Another Prithviraj starrer in a suspense thriller! The hype is real boys and you instantly get shades of his other hits like “memories”. Our beloved Prithvi in a cop role is not to be missed. And so came June 30th, I logged into my prime account. Things are so convenient now as more and more big titles are moving onto OTT platforms.

Straightaway you see that one of the main takeaways is going to be the cinematography and some of the visuals do not fail to impress you. The tone is set when the discovery of a skull is made and the story kicks off to find out as to whom it belongs. As it is synonymous with South Indian movies, the hero’s entry is made in a way to send goosebumps down the arms of every fan. Compared to his previous cop roles, I felt he was not given the right oomph in this one. Now I don’t want to give a spoiler alert by highlighting things here and there but I felt the whole film was being stretched a bit too far with so few elements to play with.

I am not too sure if this movie fell flat with inexperienced direction or if the script was a bit weak. For one, I still don’t understand which genre this movie belongs to. Yes, we have a skull leading us with a ton of questions and cops running left and right to solve the case. But why would one need to put a ghost angle in this??! This is something I felt with another recent movie which had mammooty in the lead in “The Priest”. But unlike that one, here we have two different investigations in progress with different paths which ultimately ends in a common conclusion. With the commercials highlighting the investigative angle a lot more than the paranormal one, I found the whole arrangement confusing. During the first hour, I struggled to make any sense or connection with the scenes being shown as they tried to put more emphasis on this being “scary” rather than the “thrills”. There is a child actor who quite frankly tried a bit too much to be bubbly in the whole movie.

Then comes the climax. With not much fanfare, viewers are shown who the killer is. I am not going to ruin it for you but I was disappointed to see that the end wasn’t what you would expect from an investigative thriller. Ultimately though, this movie failed to impress me as the movie was struggling to find its feet throughout. But I truly appreciate the efforts being made into the making of this film as it was good to see filmmakers trying different things, especially during the difficult pandemic scenarios. To conclude, I’d say go ahead and give this a try during the weekend but yes, please don’t keep your hopes up too much.
